Background of the Study:
Naming practices are a vital aspect of cultural identity, reflecting historical, familial, and societal values. In Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, indigenous naming conventions have long embodied the community’s rich heritage. However, a decline in indigenous language proficiency—spurred by globalization and the adoption of modern languages—has led to a shift toward anglicized names, reducing the cultural depth traditionally associated with naming (Adebowale, 2023; Ogun, 2024). This erosion of indigenous linguistic influence on naming practices not only diminishes cultural identity but also affects intergenerational transmission of heritage. Recent studies suggest that naming conventions serve as barometers of linguistic health, underscoring the need to examine the effects of language decline on these traditions (Folorunsho, 2024).

Statement of the Problem:
The decline in indigenous language proficiency in Ijebu-Ode is adversely affecting traditional naming practices, leading to a shift toward modern names that dilute cultural heritage (Ogun, 2023). The lack of initiatives to preserve indigenous naming conventions raises concerns about the loss of cultural identity (Folorunsho, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To investigate the impact of indigenous language decline on traditional naming practices.
  2. To analyze socio-cultural factors contributing to the shift in naming conventions.
  3. To recommend measures for revitalizing indigenous naming practices.

Research Questions:

  1. How has the decline in indigenous language affected naming practices in Ijebu-Ode?
  2. What socio-cultural factors contribute to the shift from traditional to modern naming conventions?
  3. What strategies can revive indigenous naming practices?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. The decline in indigenous language significantly impacts traditional naming practices.
  2. Socio-cultural influences play a major role in the shift toward modern naming conventions.
  3. Revitalization initiatives will improve adherence to indigenous naming practices.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it highlights the cultural implications of indigenous language decline on naming practices. Its findings will inform community leaders and policymakers on strategies to preserve traditional nomenclature, thereby reinforcing cultural identity and heritage.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the effects of indigenous language decline on naming practices in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. It focuses on traditional naming conventions, cultural factors, and revitalization strategies, with limitations including reliance on historical and self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Indigenous Language Decline: The reduction in the use and proficiency of native languages.
  2. Naming Practices: The traditions and methods of assigning culturally significant names.
  3. Cultural Identity: The collective values and traditions that define a community.
